A handmade concertina artist’s book bringing seven hand-printed images into one unfolding, numbered collector’s object.

The edition is conceived as an encounter between evidence and material form. The book’s images do not illustrate events from a distance; they register confinement, interrupted time and the unstable passage between visibility and proof.

01/07 Evidentiary inversion

The printing process

From digital matrix to an impression made under pressure

Each image begins as an artist-prepared, borderless monochrome master. It is transferred to a UV-sensitive photopolymer plate, developed in water and printed as an intaglio impression. The digital files contain only the image area; any unprinted sheet margin is determined during physical production.

    Prepare the matrix

    The tonal image is calibrated at its final plate size and output as a high-density transparency.

  2. 02

    Expose the plate

    The transparency is contact-exposed onto a light-sensitive polymer plate, then washed and hardened.

  3. 03

    Ink and wipe

    Ink is worked into the recessed image and the plate surface is wiped by hand before every impression.

  4. 04

    Print and edition

    Dampened cotton paper and plate pass through an etching press; approved impressions are dried, signed and numbered.

Definition I

Evidentiary inversion

The condition produced when a crime is committed inside massacre: the attack destroys the proof conditions—living complainants, bounded scenes, rapid medical collection and unbroken police sequence—that the conventional evidentiary standard requires. The crime and the erasure of its own evidence are one act. It is the structural reason why the absence of a conventional rape-case profile cannot be treated as disproof, and why convergence across independent witness channels constitutes the appropriate and sufficient standard under mass-atrocity conditions.

Definition II

Instruments of coercion

Persons, resources or conditions held by one party to compel decision or concession from another. In the hostage context, the instrument is a living person whose survival and visibility are rationed by the captor to sustain political pressure across time.

Definition III

Coercive leverage

Pressure extracted by controlling a hostage’s survival, visibility or release. Ordinary bargaining leverage operates through an exchange demand; coercive leverage also operates through the public cost of continued captivity and captor-controlled uncertainty.

Civilian targeting by design

The pre-attack conversion of civilian geography and time into operational advantage, so that ordinary civilian vulnerability becomes the weapon’s mechanism rather than a collateral consequence of operations aimed elsewhere.

Definition IX

Proof-of-life operation

A communication that confirms a hostage was alive at recording time while functioning simultaneously as humanitarian signal and coercive instrument, with timing, staging and release designed to shape bargaining pressure rather than to provide neutral information.

Definition X

Pattern sufficiency

The evidentiary standard used where no single scene remains intact, so proof is established through recurrence and convergence across independent channels, sites and witness classes, rather than through completeness in any one victim-level file damaged by massacre conditions. It applies only where damage to conventional proof conditions is documented; it supports pattern-level conclusions, not individual attribution, and weakens if its channels prove dependent or unsound.

Definition XI

Law of denial

The procedural form by which institutions operationalise a prior moral map through timing, wording and asymmetric evidentiary standards. Its operation would have to be shown through matched selective practice rather than assumed from a single contradiction of facts, because equivalent events would receive delayed, constrained or reframed treatment when the prior map makes recognition institutionally costly. In this book it remains a falsifiable hypothesis pending matched comparison.
