Reconstructing the October 7 Record

A Documentary Account by Shlomo Kashani

The attack did not end at the sites of murder and abduction. It continued through captivity, propaganda, damaged evidence and the inversion of proof. Drawing testimony, visual records, forensic findings and later corroboration into one sequence, the book separates what is established, what remains uncertain, and how denial exploits the space between them.

October 7: Massacre, Captivity, Denial reconstructs the attack, the hostage system, and the struggle over the record as one documentary sequence.

Why this book

From an imagined art book to a documentary record

Explore the documentary book

When I began this book, I imagined an art book. Image, colour and memory seemed capable of carrying what I wanted to say about October 7. Reading testimony changed the project.

Names, times, places and source conditions kept interrupting the visual sequence. An image could convey loss, but it could not by itself establish who made it, when it was made, what happened outside its frame, or how later reports had used it. I found myself building a documentary record instead.

The book reconstructs the initial attack, the captivity that followed, later testimony and the institutional reception of the evidence as one contested historical record. It preserves the different standards governing documentary reconstruction, interpretation, legal analysis and moral judgement rather than allowing one form of claim to borrow certainty from another.

A damaged archive is not an empty archive.

Victims were murdered, scenes were burned or moved, locations remained dangerous, and some testimony emerged only after release from captivity. The surviving record is therefore tested through convergence across witness accounts, responder observations, visual material, forensic evidence, released-hostage testimony and institutional investigations.

What if an atrocity destroys the evidence that would prove it?

October 7 turned homes, roads, shelters and a music festival into sites of massacre, sexual violence and abduction. Many victims were murdered; bodies were burned or moved; survivors were carried into Gaza. The ordinary route to proof was broken by the crime itself. That damage was then turned against the victims, as the absence of pristine evidence was recast as the absence of atrocity.

Where the record remains incomplete, the gaps stay visible. Where the evidence converges, the book names what it establishes without euphemism.

Concepts

Ten terms for describing what ordinary language leaves unresolved.

Four core definitions frame the record; six further terms name specific operations of captivity, coercion, and proof.

† Specified use

Evidentiary Inversion

The condition produced when a crime is committed inside massacre: the attack destroys the proof conditions—living complainants, bounded scenes, rapid medical collection and unbroken police sequence—that the conventional evidentiary standard requires. The crime and the erasure of its own evidence are one act. It explains why the absence of a conventional rape-case profile cannot be treated as disproof and why convergence across independent witness channels is the appropriate and sufficient standard under mass-atrocity conditions.

‡ New synthesis

Pattern Sufficiency

The evidentiary standard used where no single scene remains intact, so proof is established through recurrence and convergence across independent channels, sites and witness classes rather than through completeness in any one victim-level file damaged by massacre conditions. It applies only where destruction of conventional proof conditions is documented; it supports pattern-level conclusions rather than individual attribution and weakens if its channels prove dependent or unsound.

‡ New synthesis

Civilian Targeting by Design

A form of organised violence in which pre-attack planning converts civilian geography and civilian time into operational advantage by mapping homes, roads, shelters, gathering spaces and routes of escape as an integrated field of assault, so ordinary civilian vulnerability becomes the method of violence instead of its incidental consequence. It is present when the target set consists primarily of civilian spaces, the attack exploits advance-readable patterns of civilian concentration or exposure, and civilian vulnerability functions as the weapon’s mechanism rather than collateral harm from operations aimed elsewhere.

§ Coined in this sense

Law of Denial

The law of denial is the procedural form by which institutions operationalise a prior moral map through timing, wording and asymmetric evidentiary standards. Its operation would appear through matched selective practice rather than a single contradiction of facts: equivalent events would receive delayed, constrained or reframed treatment when the prior map makes recognition institutionally costly. Chapter 10 treats this as a falsifiable hypothesis and identifies the comparisons still required; it does not claim that the present files establish a general law.

Captured text § An interpretive regime in which evidence is admitted only after a prior moral map has sorted actors, injuries and legitimacy, so that meaning is largely decided before verification begins and equivalent claims are processed under different thresholds depending on who is cast as victim, perpetrator or context. Coercive visibility § The deliberate governance of what an adversary is permitted to see about captives: footage, communications or proof-of-life signals are released when disclosure maximises pressure and withheld when silence produces greater fear or paralysis. Unlike ordinary information control, coercive visibility treats the adversary’s perception itself as an operational field in which showing and withholding are equally purposive. Proof-of-life operation ‡ A communication that confirms a hostage was alive at recording time while functioning simultaneously as humanitarian signal and coercive instrument, with timing, staging and release designed to shape bargaining pressure rather than to provide neutral information. Instruments of coercion † Persons, resources or conditions held by one party to compel a decision or concession from another. In the hostage context, the instrument is a living person whose survival and visibility the captor rations to sustain political pressure across time. Coercive leverage † Pressure extracted by controlling a hostage’s survival, visibility or release. Ordinary bargaining leverage operates through an exchange demand; coercive leverage also operates through the public cost of continued captivity and captor-controlled uncertainty. Evidentiary threshold gaming § The procedural manoeuvre in which evidentiary requirements are selectively inflated for one class of claim, victim or event while equivalent claims in adjacent domains are admitted under ordinary standards. Whether the asymmetry is denial by procedure or legitimate concern for accuracy is an empirical question requiring matched comparison.

How the record is tested

A method the reader can inspect rather than merely trust.

01

Convergent sourcing

Claims are tested across independent witness and documentary channels.

02

Dated claims

Early accounts remain distinct from later correction and corroboration.

03

Source typing

Each source is assessed according to how and when it was produced.
